Jewel Owusu explores deteriorating relationships on latest alt-drill single, 'Outside'

Melbourne/Naarm’s Jewel Owusu delivers her fourth single for 2023 in the alt-drill release, ‘Outside’, which is out now. The singer/songwriter and producer has teamed up with London-based artist, Tenn, to explore the raw emotions of deteriorating relationships.

"Outside" explores the intricacies of relationships and reflects that pivotal moment when you come to the realisation that your cherished person is gradually slipping away. It encapsulates the anxious anticipation of the inevitable moment when they will vanish from your life completely. Dylan Guy's production lays the groundwork for the hyperpop drill beat, serving as both its foundation and one of its standout elements.

Jewel (with Dylan Guy) has brought forward a super-wet sounding alt/hyper pop take in ‘Outside’ that is completely tidal, surging with a drill beat undercurrent. There’s plenty of movement, without being overcrowded, from slick bluesy loops, staccato touches, glitchy, pitched-up harmonies, and auto-tune cranked to ten - something that at first listen becomes a distraction, until you realise its use as an extra instrument, is to create the illusion of uncertainty, and to give the impression of something beautiful breaking down. ‘Outside’ is slick, warped hyper pop with RnB flavours that leave you soaked.

The track came together naturally as Jewel's cousin connected her with Tenn, who’s impressive smooth PARTYNEXTDOOR-esc melodies create the perfect blend with Jewel's silky vocals.

On the back of performances at the Inaugural SXSW Sydney Owusu has been making waves in the music industry with her unique blend of alternative pop, dance, indie, hip-hop, and R&B. Having shared the stage & collaborated with acclaimed artists like Vera Blue, Methyl Ethel, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Jewel's music has garnered attention from platforms like MTV Australia, Triple J, and more recently her preceding track B-day reaching 65,000 streams and gracing the cover of Youtube editorial Beat Waves.

On the record Owusu explains, “I wrote this song because I feel like adult friendships and relationships can sometimes feel transient, leaving us with no choice but to take it on the chin like the lyrics said "I'm outside, and I'll take it on the chin the way you've been.”

Jewel Owusu is at the forefront of a sound that is not only unique in Australia but also resonates on a global scale. As she teases her forthcoming EP, "Jool Wave," this track will keep you busy as you deep dive into the R&B sprinkled Alt-pop dance fusioniverse of Jewel Owusu.

‘Outside’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
