Buttermello show no signs of being 'Old and Cynical' with brand new upbeat indie banger

Sunshine Coast’s Buttermello have been paving their upbeat indie ways up and down the Eastern Coastline since forming in late 2020, with three well-played singles under their collected belts, and they’re now adding to their catalogue with the brand new single, ‘Old and Cynical’.

The new release is the first taste of their upcoming EP, with the indie banger seeing frontman Brandon Boss drawing inspiration from Spacey Jane, Peach Pit, and The Cure.

‘Old and Cynical’ is awash with sunny 80s synthed-out nostalgia, and they don’t go light on the jangly guitars. The dry, gated snare and the deadened tom tones (another 80s production nod) give a short, punchy drum attack - there’s no room here for big boomy sounds. There’s plenty of layers to peel back, and while the central instruments sound tightly compacted, it leaves plenty of air for the synths and Brandon’s vocals (with some clever phrasing added in) to really cut through. ‘Old and Cynical’ is packed with coastal indie vibes, making it difficult to resist the old shake of the hip to this. And someone give that tambourine player a raise - the hidden MVP of this track.

The single began its life as a set-filler, however after positive feedback from the band, peers and punters, it soon become a climatic moment of Buttermello’s shows and a crowd favourite, making a for a must-release song in 2023.

‘Old and Cynical’ tackles coming of age and realising all the problems of society that were spoken about when you were a child have not changed much at all.

Written, produced and mastered by Brandon, ‘Old and Cynical’ reflects his development, both behind the desk and as a performer, along with maturity and control demonstrated by the rest of Buttermello.

Keep an eye out for the upcoming EP, as well as Buttermello’s ‘Old and Cynical’ release party at Ole Noosa on February 4th.

‘Old and Cynical’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
