Melbourne funk rockers Ramona Sky release self-titled debut EP, announce line-up change.

Melbourne funk rockers, Ramona Sky have released their debut self-titled EP, a six-track package of 70s & 90s inspired rock and funk, that slinks and grooves its way over 24 minutes.

The band are also celebrating the release at their launch show at Melbourne’s The Tote on July 9th, which will also be the last show of guitarist Bobby Sek, and bassist Nick Laby, with remaining members, vocalist Chelsea Sharp and drummer Jess Majo continuing Ramona Sky with their next step to be announced.

This self-titled EP surprises mostly from the unexpected bass tone that is evident from the start, as with genre Ramona Sky work within (that of 70s rock meets 90s funk), you generally don’t expect so much growl from the bass, but it works. When the band are working with their strengths, they really do shine; the drums punch hard, but are not over-cooked, there’s minimal over-dubbing or processing on the guitar, that bass tone, and vocalist Chelsea’s control over the jazz-lounge croon style and harmonies is smooth. Moments like the sleaze groove in the chorus to ‘Dirty Little Things’, the clever pre-chorus in ‘Plain To See’, and the handclap hook in lead single, ‘Think You’re Mine’ are just hints of a young band still discovering their sound, and curious now to see, with the departure of their bassist and guitarist, in what direction they’ll head in.

Ramona Sky's self-titled EP reflects the band's unique story of originally meeting online, bonding over Zoom during Melbourne's lockdown, and writing music over video chat. The EP came together over a stressful year in and out of lockdowns and uncertainty, whilst the band squeezed in as many live shows around Melbourne's most iconic venues as they could in between.

Ramona Sky have played countless shows across Melbourne over the past few years, creating an outstanding reputation in the live music scene. The band is known for their stage presence and live performances, and recently headlined Slowly Slowly's after party show which was one of the band's largest crowds. Inspired by a mix of 70’s rock and 90’s funk, Ramona Sky’s presence is made up of powerful lead vocals and bright harmonies, distinct driving bass lines, funky guitar rhythms and punchy in-the-pocket drums.
