Brisbane's Scandal Tree channel 90s underground hard rock dirge on new single, 'Tooth Fairy'

Brisbane rock out, Scandal Tree bring together a new vocalist and a new sound, birthing a monster single in ‘Tooth Fairy’ which is out now.

The new single tickles the ear fuzz and (perhaps) your funny bone too, with the track rocking and rumbling with super saturated distortion, rhythmic punch, brooding vocal and just a splash of harmonica for good measure.

Thematically, ‘Tooth Fairy’ investigates the demented withdraw of little beasties cut off from their juice. Fairytale creatures who feed on milk teeth and grow resentful and irrational when the children grow up and the teeth stop dropping out. And though the idea may initially seem frivolous, the track disguises its core theme of addiction and addictive behaviours.

“Who doesn’t love a good song about heartbreak, torment and cannibalism?” quips the singer writer Huck, “But we know these are some of the monsters in our lives - an outer shell of benevolence and a tormented monster just beneath”.

‘Tooth Fairy’ drags you straight into the grit of the ’90s underground, where dive bars shook with dirge-heavy riffs and sweat-soaked walls. Scandal Tree summon that spirit with echoing drums, fuzz-drenched guitars, and vocals that fall somewhere between The Cult’s Ian Astbury and The Screaming Jets’ Dave Gleeson. It’s a blues-rock bruiser that feels crammed right up against the amps, bleeding through overdriven tones and spilling across sticky concrete floors. The kind of track you’d stumble across on Rage at 3am, only to have it sear into memory and come roaring back the next time you catch Scandal Tree in a Brisbane pub.

Accompanying the release of ‘Tooth Fairy’ is a totally whack music video made by the band themselves. Mixing greasepaint, dentistry, ghouls and snakes, the video will leave many mouths agape.

The song is the first single from Scandal Tree’s debut Album, Never Look a Gift Foot in the Mouth, with the release date coming soon. ‘Tooth Fairy’ and the other nine tracks were recorded at Core Studios and engineered by Oz music legend Nik Carpenter.

‘Tooth Fairy’ and its accompanying music video is out now via digital streaming platforms (and Youtube).

Catch Scandal Tree at PFR Lounge in Brisbane on September 26th with ValveTrain and Ruination.
