Anthony Forrest brings aurally stunning electro-soul experience on debut self-titled album

Brisbane electro-soul artist, Anthony Forrest releases his self-titled debut solo album, which also features third single, ‘Hot Rock’ - a super-springy, quirky string-laden electro-soul track that sits right in the middle of the album.

To celebrate the release of the debut album, Anthony Forrest is doing a small run of shows in Queensland and Victoria, hitting The Presynct in Nambour tonight (Friday March 15), following by It’s Still a Secret in Brisbane on Saturday March 16, and down to Shotkickers in Melbourne on April 14.

Beautifully eclectic, aurally stunning, Anthony Forrest’s debut solo album is a deeper exploration for the more electronic sounds, merged with Anthony’s distinct, smooth vocal delivery. Anthony flirts frequently with heavy dub, understandably entrenched in his songwriting (being the frontman of Brisbane legends, Kingfisha), but mixes in trip hop, electronica, and soul for a massive sounding outcome. From the cinematic and mystifying ‘Trying to Forget’, to the more familiar dub bounce of single, ‘Get There’, the satisfyingly uneasy ‘Hard Times’, through to the springy, gorgeously quirky ‘Hot Rock’ (which is also the single to accompany the album release), the self-titled album is a bass-heavy, multi-textural experience that needs to be absorbed, preferably through the biggest sound system you have access to.

Speaking about the song, Forrest said “My phonecalls and emails started drying up because I wasn’t the flavour of the month I once was… I wrote this one quickly on the acoustic guitar in the backyard - came together really easily in the studio as well - then towards the end of the album process I brought in some friends and they added some strings.”

Forrest has been a prominent figure in the Australian music scene for many years, garnering a reputation as a formidable singer and songwriter for reggae/dub act Kingfisha who won Triple J Unearthed Roots and a Queensland Music Award, touring the world extensively over a 10-year period. Forrest was recently shortlisted in the Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition for his solo work.

Last year Forrest released his first solo single ‘Get There’ which was added to rotation on Double J; saw airplay on soul radio and playlists around Australia and overseas, and has clocked up 25k+ streams on Spotify.

If you’re chasing a satisfying sonic journey, play Anthony Forrest’s debut self-titled album front to back, and immerse yourself in the many layers, heavy bass, and smooth vocals, letting yourself drift away into the ether - just for 40 minutes.
