Sunshine Coast indie BFFs, Betty Taylor unveil debut EP, 'Young Dumb Immature'.
Sunshine Coast breakout indie BFFs, Betty Taylor have toured, conquered festival stages, and now have dropped their debut EP, ‘Young Dumb Immature’ - a collection of personal stories wrapped in catching indie hooks, dreamy guitar riffs and raw emotion.
Pulling together heartfelt lyrics and the energy captured from their live shows, the EP marks a significant milestone in the band’s rapidly growing career.
Described by frontwoman Sophie Patrick as ‘music for feeling all your big feelings,’ the EP is a somewhat of a diary capturing moments of love, heartbreak, and personal growth.
‘It’s full of all the things I wanted to say to people but never could directly,’ says Patrick. ‘The person I am today is proud of being so vulnerable and grateful for having the space to write freely, without expectations.’
The EP features 7 tracks, each reflecting a different chapter of Patrick’s life. Songs like ‘Stallin’ and ‘Can’t Get Enough’ explore the highs and lows of crushes and daydreams, while ‘Young Dumb Immature,’ ‘Glitter,’ and ‘Hollow’ delve into real-life experiences and relationships. ‘Gaslighter’ stands out as an anthem for anyone who’s ever been on the receiving end of manipulation, blending personal stories with a universal theme of standing up for oneself.
Betty Taylor’s debut EP is a masterclass in how to craft a release that feels both timeless and fresh. The quartet has pulled together six of their crowd-favourite singles, alongside the unreleased gem ‘Gaslighter,’ to deliver a seven-track collection soaked in 70s stadium vibes and raw indie-rock emotion.
From the opening moments of their breakout single ‘Stallin,’ the EP flows effortlessly, showcasing Betty Taylor's knack for penning irresistibly hook-laden tracks that resonate deeply. Tapping into Australia’s penchant for powerful, raw, relatable, danceable alternative tones, with BT channelling earlier The Preatures material, the band has filled a space left in the Australian music scene that many didn’t realise was so vacant. Each track is a testament to the band's storytelling prowess, capturing moments of heartbreak, defiance, and nostalgia, all wrapped up in a sonic package that demands movement and connection.
Closing with the no-holds-barred anthem ‘Fuck You,’ the EP doesn’t just end—it lingers. For a band only two years in, Betty Taylor is beyond just hitting their stride. With ‘Young Dumb Immature’, they’ve not only found their footing—they’ve planted themselves firmly in the landscape of Australian indie rock.
Playing their first gig at a backyard party band just over two years ago, Betty Taylor has quickly won over audiences across Australia. Their debut single ‘Stallin,’ produced by the renowned Aidan Hogg (G Flip, Jaguar Jonze), premiered on Triple J and has already surpassed 400,000 streams. Follow-up singles ‘Glitter,’ ‘Can’t Get Enough’ and ‘Young Dumb Immature’ further solidified their place in Australia’s indie scene, earning them widespread airplay and a growing fan base and now close to 2 million streams.
Betty Taylor’s rise in the music world was further bolstered by joining WME, a prestigious
global agency, in 2023. Their live shows, known for their charm and energy, have seen them share stages with girl in red, The Rubens, Teenage Dads, Boy and Bear, The Buoys and more recently touring the UK and Europe with The Grogans. They’ve also made their mark at major festivals like Groovin the Moo, Big Pineapple Festival, and NYE On The Hill.
‘Young Dumb Immature’ is not just a debut but a personal triumph for Sophie Patrick and the band. ‘The title track ‘Young Dumb Immature’ feels like a metaphor for the growth of the band and within myself,’ Patrick says. ‘It’s also the first song I ever performed publicly, ] so it feels right having it as the title track.’
Working with Aidan Hogg has been a transformative experience for the band, as Patrick explains: ‘Aidan made us feel at home in the studio. He made the environment fun and relaxed, and over time, we went from just tracking songs to writing in the room. His understanding of my musical influences made the writing process so inspiring.’
The release of ‘Young Dumb Immature,’ will resonate with anyone who has ever felt the complexities of young love, personal growth, or the simple joys and frustrations of being human.
The debut EP from Betty Taylor, ‘Young Dumb Immature’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
