Lucid Safari chase 'Something More' on latest sparkly dream rock single

Brisbane/Meanjin’s Lucid Safari have proven themselves to be one of the areas finest dream-rock acts in a considerably short amount of time. Following on from earlier single, ‘When You Go’, the band have just dropped their latest single, ‘Something More’.

"Something More" is inspired by the feeling of “what could’ve been?” It reflects on two people whose timing was never right, leaving lingering questions about mutual feelings. The song evokes a nostalgic, late-night reflection, wondering if they ever felt the same after losing touch. With a melancholic but hopeful tone, this guitar and synthesizer driven track blends heartfelt emotion with a sense of longing. It was co-written with Blake Malone and Graham Ritchie to capture a deeper, more reflective sound for Lucid Safari.

Lucid Safari’s evolution from more roots-based indie into pop-drenched dream rock has been a rapid, and cleverly-crafted one, and ‘Something More’ further pushes those boundaries for the Brisbane outfit. Super sparkly, spacey and with a heavy polish, the new track leans in heavy on the dance rock side, while also relying on nostalgic 80s pop rock moments for extra bombast. It’s slick, syrupy fun, that once again demonstrates Lucid Safari’s understanding of their ability as songwriters and knack for pushing their own limits.

Since their inception, Lucid Safari has been making an impact. In their first year, with only the debut single ‘Walking Free’ under their belt, they scored first place at The Sound Garden’s Battle of the Bands competition (2020), earning them high praise, and setting them early on the path to success. Just a month later, they tore up the main stage at the inaugural Wynnum Fringe Festival, and continued to accelerate; their efforts landing them on lineups alongside some stellar acts including Kate Miller-Heidke and Ian Moss.

2021 saw the release of their sophomore single ‘Lady’ - “A roots-rock flavoured love song that sizzles with a pulsating rhythm section and psychedelic, bluesy flourishes throughout” (Scenstr, 2021), which performed exceptionally well, landing countless rave reviews, and high rotation at US Radio Station KXFM. ‘Lady’ also gave fans the first taste of what was to come; the appetiser of the group’s highly anticipated debut EP, ‘Delirium’. Dropped in early 2022, ‘Delirium’ was heralded “the crispiest EP known to mammals” (Livewire, 2022), featuring five top-shelf tracks held together with intentional cohesion, taking listeners on a journey from summer-groove opener ‘Flickering Lights’ through to the daydreamy closer ‘Always On My Mind’, which charted at No. 5 on the AMRAP metro chart, in March, 2022.

Lucid Safari celebrated the release of ‘Delirium’ with their first headline show, impressively selling out Brisbane/Meanjin’s Black Bear Lodge in the midst of the Queensland floods, leaving a loud and enraptured audience wanting more from the rising indie stars. They didn’t have to wait long, as come November, the group released their second 2022 single ‘Waiting For The Sun’, once again stunning audiences with a show at The Woolly Mammoth. This release was then followed by a show supporting Australian X-factor winner, Reece Mastin, and saw the group’s fateful return to The Wynnum Fringe Festival.

In July 2023, Lucid Safari took their dazzling live show across the country, playing a whopping 13 shows over 3 weeks across cities in Queensland, as well as Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra. For 2024, the band are in the studio, laying down some brand new tracks; their sound going through an evolution they are more than excited to reveal to fans as soon as possible.

With an upward trajectory set to shoot them far beyond imagination, Lucid Safari continue to prove they are a dreamlike adventure worth joining for the ride.
