Mufassa gives tease of new EP with lead single, the island roots jam, 'Sea Turtle'
Western Australian (and sometime Sunshine Coaster) Mufassa gives a tease of his upcoming third studio EP with the brand new (and lead) single, ‘Sea Turtle’ which is out today.
The release comes ahead of Mufassa’s return to Caloundra Music Festival, playing the third and final day (Sunday) of the event at 1.30pm.
Don’t let ‘Sea Turtle’s dreamy ocean intro fool you though - Mufassa’s latest single is a all about the party. It’s fresh, fun and full of playful riffs that will make you want to move.
‘Sea Turtle’ gently washes over you from the start, with the rhythm swelling into a full-blown island roots jam that’s bold, bassy and smooth. Summery and shufflin’, Mufassa, working alongside Paulie B at Yama Nui, continues in his coastal reggae stylings, with ‘Sea Turtle’ levelling up with the little intricacies hidden among the super-full, yet stylistically simple sound - it’s a roots reggae puzzle that unfolds just a little more with every repeat listen, allowing you to pick out little gems each time.
The track does make you want to listen harder each time, particularly when you pull apart the layers of percussion, where you’ll find some clever rhythms, including one played on a Jar Rustafari - which is the lid off a rusted old honey jar.
The track was written about a therapeutic surf in Exmouth, Western Australia, and then dragged across the continent to be recorded with Paulie B and Yama Nui Studio in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.
‘Sea Turtle’ is available for streaming now on all digital platforms, and be sure to catch this exciting musical nomad this coming Caloundra Music Festival, with Mufassa playing the Sun Stage at 1.30pm
