Alt-pop power-couple JUNO return with mesmerising collaboration with Jude Korab in 'nobody loves you when you're down'
Brisbane/Meanjin power alt-pop couple, JUNO follow up on the success of previous singles such as ‘moonboy’ and ‘come thru’ with their latest mesmerising effort, a collaboration with R&B artist Jude Korab in ‘nobody loves you when you’re down’.
Produced, mixed and mastered by JUNO member Sam Woods, and Jude Korab, the new single introduces swirling synths under JUNO’s Kahlia Ferguson’s hook-laden melodies and candid lyricism. Blending with Jude Korab’s velvety voice slicing through the hypnotic ambience, which creates a cosmic connection between both singers, exhaling solace and melancholy. This is all over the layers of lush instrumentation that progressively intensify, before concluding with a fusion of glitched rhythmic patterns and crackling harmonics.
JUNO take a slightly darker turn away from their effervescent alt-pop stylings to bring a more svelte and melancholic take in ‘nobody loves you when you’re down’. The songwriting power-coupling of Sam Woods and Kahlia Ferguson are boosted by the collaboration with fellow Brisbane artist, R&B singer Jude Korab, who balances out Kahlia’s hooky, effortless and airy delivery, with his soulful baritone sliding underneath. JUNO (and Jude) tackle a delicate subject with fervour and spice, delivering a slick, pulsing alt-pop track, with one of the best musical epilogues heard in some time.
Kahlia talks about the inspirations behind, 'nobody loves you when you're down’, including HBO's hit TV show Euphoria:
"'nobody loves you when you're down' is a song about toxic friendships that bail on you whenever you're going through hard times. I've had periods of time where my mental health has suffered and life has hit me with a lot of curve balls, and communication has just slowly dropped off with certain people in my life. Those friends are always so happy and keen to be there when you're down to party and drink and dance, but conveniently disappear when you really need them. I drew a lot of inspiration from the TV show Euphoria. The imagery and themes really got into my head after bingeing both seasons." To celebrate the release, JUNO have teamed up with RARIA for their first co-headline East Coast Tour, continuing on from a run of shows supporting the likes of Peking Duk, Pacific Avenue, Selfish Sons, CODY JON, Adraian Dvuke, Safety Club and Greatest Hits. They have also played Super Fun Day alongside FIDLAR (USA), Pale Waves (UK), Beach Bunny (USA), Dune Rats and Ruby Fields. Previous singles have seen support from Apple Music, Soundcloud, triple j, triple j Unearthed, iHeart Australia, FBi, 4ZZZ, 2SER, RTR FM and JOY Media. In the blogosphere, they've also seen love from The Music, Pilerats, The AU Review, Music Feeds, Livewire AU, MILKY and Breaking Through Podcast. Their music videos have also been added to MTV Upload and ABC's rage.
