Brisbane/Meanjin duo, Upsetter dive headfirst into epic new single, 'Tell Your Friends You Love Them' - release debut 'Doomgaze' EP
One of the more unique outfits in the heavier/alt scene in Brisbane/Meanjin, Upsetter have practically come out of nowhere this year to introduce their insane hybrid of emo/shoegaze and doom, and continue that with their latest offering, ‘Tell Your Friends You Love Them’, which features on their just announced new EP, ‘Doomgaze’.
‘Tell Your Friends You Love Them’ is a triumphant offering, which sees the dynamic Upsetter duo team up with the vocal prowess of good friends Jayden Ridley and Nicholas Farr from Stepson and Dylan Davidson of Deadlights.
To claim that Upsetter are a unique band is an understatement. They walk the fine line between slackerisms and monstrous fuzz, the intensity of the de-tuned sludgy madness, and the shoulder-shrugging whatever style vocals shouldn’t work, but just does.’Tell Your Friends You Love Them’ comes at you like a rush to the head, fuzz turned to 12, and In Utero-esque tub-thumping, which is only soothed by vocalist Jasper’s vocal takes. The stroke of brilliance of collaborating with Stepson’s Jayden and Nicholas, as well as Dylan from Deadlights just ups the intensity of the track. Doomgaze, Shoemetal, whatever the label, ‘Tell Your Friends You Love Them’ is bludgeoning, sludgy goodness.
To expand on the meaning of the new track, songwriter and vocalist Jasper Webb explains that ‘Tell Your Friends You Love Them’ was written some time ago, after losing a friend far too soon.
"The song is about taking the opportunity to express your love whenever possible, because one day you might not be able to. It's an important one for me in that we got to collaborate with artists I have genuine love and respect for - Jayden and Nick from Stepson, and Dylan from Deadlights. The song represents community in both message and delivery. Everyone leaves. We just don't know when. That's why it's important to tell your friends you love them,” he said.
Upsetter teamed up with three time ARIA-Award winning producer and long time friend Cody McWaters (The Chats, King Stingray) to record their defining new music, sharing honest self reflections, the journey of emotional processing and naked truths over the backdrop of sludgy guitar lines and passionate vocals.
