PREMIERE - Melbourne's Tiarn Toni mesmerises with dark dance pop debut, 'Never Mind'

Melbourne-based singer/songwriter/producer Tiarn Toni roars on to the scene, debuting with her single, ‘Never Mind’, which releases today.

A deeply creative and multi-disciplinary artist, Tiarn explores music through the lens of dance and design, using her unique past experiences to create raw and delicate lyrics paired with acoustic-infused electronic music.

‘Never Mind’ is a mind-bending alternative pop dance track which explores the feeling of not belong. Written, recorded, and produced by Tiarn, the single is inspired by a time of her life when she was questioning her belief system, and felt like her attempts to explore and solidify her faith were met with hypocrisy and dismissal.

Tiarn Toni’s pixie-ish rasp immediately brings to mind the vocals of Lou Rhodes (Lamb - think the famous track ‘Gorecki’), which has this magical blend of coldness, melancholy, and defiance; a strength in something that seems so small. The organic touches of the atmospheric sounds, and the timbre of the piano at the start of the track, merge into the heaving, bouncing bass-line, beat, and dripping synths, with Tiarn’s vocals taking on a haunting, but freeing character. Whether intentional or not, ‘Never Mind’ adopts a late 90s/early 00s house/trip hop tone, meandering through the duration of the track, right up until that last magical dissonant note, which leaves the listener with a cliffhanger.

Although the lyrics cry out as a plea for acceptance, the production of the song represents an act of defiance. Featuring a dance-inspired bass line and an uptempo beat, the song shines by combining the acoustic elements of piano, with electronic pads and synth lines. However, it’s the addition of Tiarn’s unique vocal that ignites the song and invites the listener into her world.

With a dark and electronic fuelled chorus adorned with harmonic vocal layers repeating the track’s title, “Never mind” is a song that is sure to have you dancing as an act of revenge against anyone who made you feel like you didn’t belong.
