Shen Panthers shun the rules and deliver 6 minute epic single, 'Psychedelic Alleyway'

Sunshine Coast’s Shen Panthers have had enough of 2022 already, and have opened a can of whoop-ass in the guise of their new single, ‘Psychedelic Alleyway’ - a 6 minute and 18 second mammoth journey that is free for the taking.

In an age of heavy music consumption and two-minute tracks, it’s not often a single hits the 6 minute plus bracket, but Shen Panthers shun the trend and have delivered their own epic in ‘Psychedelic Alleyway’. Drenched in delay and wah, you’d be forgiven for thinking the track was a heavily Ocean Alley-inspired track, but that shifts at the one minute mark when the band go full tilt. It’s distinctively Australian Alt/Indie with coastal flavours thrown in. Even in quieter moments, the song still feels like it’s full steam ahead, until it turns on itself, and throws a sneaky reggae groove in the mix.

Shen Panthers state that the title might seem suggestive, but the track remains open to everyones’s own interpretation; in essence, the song is about having a moment of realisation, pushing through and making changes.

“There are a whole heap of songs ready to be polished off and set free. We’ve started with this one this year to break apart our current spotify catalogue. Every one of our songs are pretty different and this one sums that up nicely I think, so were kinda just testing the waters with it,” says Tom Brackley (Vocals and Guitar)

There is a film clip for the song that pays homage to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson. “We didn't want to do anything that would imply the song is supposed to be taken too seriously, so we had the idea to spin off fear and loathing. It ties into the theme of the song nicely but also makes no sense, which is exactly what we wanted.”

On the back of this release Shen Panthers have a run of shows throughout March and April. Starting off with two regional Victoria shows including Mt Hotham’s Run to the Hills Festival followed by shows on the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast supporting national and international acts.

Catch them tonight (Friday, March 4th) at Eleven Dive Bar, Maroochydore as they celebrate the launch of their single.

‘Psychedelic Alleyway’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
