Melbourne's Captives bring forth heavy punk rock sing-along in new single, 'Miles Away'
Melbourne punk-rock band Captives have once again created a thundering new single that turns the volume up to eleven! ‘Miles Away’ is the latest track to be released from their forthcoming album ‘Return To Mars’ out on March 31 ahead of their East Coast and Adelaide tour.
Captives’ earnest, thicker punk rock stands out in an era where a resurgence of fascination with pop punk and emo has seen a lot of pretenders take the spotlight. ‘Miles Away’ is a wall of guitar goodness that is both raw, yet tight, the bass has the right level of growl, the drums drive and don’t over-power the mix, and vocalist Aaron Damon is coming across as modern-day punk Springsteen (though more evident in previous single, ‘Rat Detective’). With a sing-along hook that is raucous fun, ‘Miles Away’ is pure chunky punk rock fun that builds, and ends almost too quickly.
‘Miles Away’ joins previous fierce rock anthems ‘Buried and Bones’, ‘Villain’ and ‘Gold’ in appearing on the upcoming album, the second full length release from the five-piece.
Like their previous singles, ‘Miles Away’ was recorded at The Alamo studio in Melbourne and produced and mixed by Tyson Fish (Vance Joy, Mammal, Children Collide) and mastered by Forrester Savell (Karnivool, Cog, Shihad).
Of the song, Aaron says that it was written during lockdown in Melbourne, where the band longed to be anywhere other than the most locked down city in the world in 2021.
“Miles Away has got all the feels about feeling trapped, stuck in a cycle, partying to excess and being so far away from everything and anyone you love. It sounds romantic in a sense. It also channels some inspiration from the Hoodoo Gurus, which was a band I grew up loving and still admire, so that’s ok with me,” he said.
Excluding Perth, Captives will be touring Australia this April with fans getting the opportunity to hear their new album ‘Return To Mars’ live and up close.
"The time between our last show in Japan 2020 and the first ones back will be almost two years and two months between drinks. Craaazzzy!! It’s kind of nerve racking but exciting at the same time to think we get to do it all again really soon. Can’t wait!”
Captives will be appearing at this year’s Halloween Hysteria at Mansfield Tavern (Brisbane), on April 2, which also features Spiderbait, CLOWNS, King Parrot, Stepson, Redhook, Loser and tonnes more.
‘Miles Away’ is streaming now on all platforms.
