Brisbane's Hanoi Traffic create chaotic math rock with debut EP, 'kids with no style'

Brisbane-based math rock quartet Hanoi Traffic have released their debut EP kids with no style - a six-track EP that sees the band effortlessly blend indie rock, math rock, screamo and noise rock to form their unique sound. Influenced by the likes of Daughters, Duster and black midi, Hanoi Traffic are drawn to dense and unorthodox arrangements.

The EP twists and turns on itself in what would be expected of a math-rock sound, with clever progressions and arrangements. It’s a release you need to immerse yourself in, and be wary that you could be lulled in to a false sense of security with wistful guitars, then absolutely bludgeoned the next moment with relentless screamo and aggressive, abrasive guitars. If you’re a fan of The Mars Volta, At The Drive-In etc, you’ll appreciate Hanoi Traffic’s approach.

Recorded with Jared Berriman, Hanoi Traffic’s debut EP has been in the works for months as the band tweaked each song to perfection. Following the release of their first single earlier this year, kids with no style marks hanoi traffic’s official explosive debut onto the Brisbane music scene.

In both sound and lyricism, kids with no style does not shy away from gritty and dark themes.

Isaac (vocals/guitar) shared, “All the lyrics on the EP kind of paint a larger picture of a period where I was feeling really lost and sort of spinning out of control. Some topics I seem to come back to are a constant feeling of creative inadequacy and worrying that my efforts aren’t enough, mental health (or lack thereof), and interpersonal relationships with all their associated emotions/drama/headaches.

kids with no style is available to preorder on upcycled cassette through Team Glasses Records for a limited edition run of 50 copies.

Keep an eye out for hanoi traffic’s upcoming Brisbane gigs and ‘ground dog day’ music video, coming out soon.
