Brisbane's Katanak teams up with Joolz for banging ode to Summer in 'Sunday'

Brisbane’s Katanak has teamed up with Joolz (previously in Electrik Lemonade) with the collaboration resulting in an indie-pop banger, ‘Sunday' that will warm you up over these colder months.

Born from Covid shutdowns and cancellations, the two artists found each other through social media, realising each others’ styles (Katanak’s indie/pop vibes, Joolz’ RnB/Hip Hop/Electro stylings) meshed well together, from which ‘Sunday’ was born.

Sounding like a hybrid of Ocean Alley/Lime Cordiale with a touch of Harry Styles’ ‘Watermelon Sugar’, ‘Sunday’ shows off laid-back guitar chords, with 70s disco strings, and a bold, thick pop-based rhythm section, while Joolz’ smooth, melodic rhymes bounce over the top, before Katanak’s vocal joins, making for a nicely balanced harmony. The overall product is catchy, sunny and full - a perfect Sunday afternoon soundtrack.

Of ‘Sunday’ Katanak said it is their ode to Summer.

“The heat, the sun, the lazy days, you can hear it all in this track. When this track is playing you just chill. Instant thoughts of grabbing a skateboard and catching up with friends run through your head,” he said.

Following on from Katanak's People’s Choice Award Win at QUBE Effect 2020 and making the semi finals for The International Songwriting Competition 2020, his latest with Jools is a slow-builder, which is full of summer-related metaphors (“Sunflowers, growing fast, can it last”).

After supporting Pete Murray on his 2019 Summer Sessions Tour, his following has continued to grow with his local energetic gigs. Katanak is building a reputation for creating indie pop songs that get the crowd on their feet and moving to the groove. Expect bouncy, upbeat vocals, optimistic guitar and rhythmic indie-pop beats.

‘Sunday’ is out now on all digital streaming platforms.
