Brisbane-based artist, Tayla Young returns with a wistful, dreamy, hopeful yet tragically honest new single, ‘Lorelai’ - the most refined version of the indie/folk/roots sound from the North Queensland-born singer/songwriter yet.

Pulling influences from Australian musical greats Paul Kelly and Missy Higgins, but also showing production more akin to contemporaries like Gretta Ray, and Spacey Jane, plus giving nods to the likes of Amy Shark and Thelma Plum, Tayla’s softly-loaded sound (one that accentuates her own self-professed oversharing habit) is given a lift thanks to producer Mark Myers (Mountain Kauri Studio), which mixes in electric guitar, bouncing drums and a driving bass line, with Tayla’s captivating vocals.

‘Lorelai’ conveys a fun and familiar story of an aimless romance, which Tayla explains is a lot more light-hearted than what she usually writes about.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s about a one-night stand or casual hook up, there’s a bit more to the story. But it’s definitely about having very little expectation of somebody. It’s basically just me trying to convince someone cool and uncomplicated that I’m cool and uncomplicated too, which is definitely a lie but one I probably believed at the time. We had a lot of house parties in 2020, which is how I imagine the context of the track, so I wanted the mix to sound fun and summery, like a Hottest 100 party type of vibe,” she said.

With plenty of live performances notched up (having supported the likes of Kim Churchill, Emily Wurramurra and more), plus an impressive 1.6 million streams for previous track ‘Crime of Comparison’, Tayla is excited to continue to captivate audiences with her laid-back charisma, unmistakable North Queensland inflection, and unstoppable love of storytelling.

‘Lorelai’ is out now on all digital streaming platforms.
