SA's Wanderers bring massive 70s disco rock vibes with latest single, 'Nothing In This World' - playing Solbar November 26
WANDERERS come out firing again with a soulful song about all the usual distractions not working anymore, Nothing in This World, an apt tune that gets you in the feels of the current times but also makes you wanna dance.
Channelling full 70s disco rock, Wanderers utilise the cheesy 70s synth strings and drum machines in to a fun-fuelled, loved-up groove. The falsetto vocals, and THAT bass line are musical sunshine, making it difficult not to move your body when this track is pumping.
The song came from a solo studio expedition for lead singer Dusty, caught in the midst of a creative dry spell, but wanting to be productive - he took solace in a number of tracks written by Benny Sings - co-writer of hits for Rex Orange County, Tom Misch, Mac deMarco - finding the stunning simplicity of his work an inspiration.
With the music video channeling the songs’ core message, it follows Dusty and his band mate Matt as they navigate their way through what’s expected to be typical highs in life, but they just aren’t shaking that lacklustre feeling.
Of writing the song Dusty Lee said ‘I felt that I was at a crossroads at the time, approaching 30 and realising that my old algorithms for distraction and excitement weren’t really working the same way they used to. I wanted more, but not sure what, when or how. All I knew was that my olds tricks weren’t serving me anymore. So I dove deep into this feeling, which actually brought me some sort of clarity’
When the song still didn’t move forward after the band tried different ideas, rewrites and tracking parts at different studios, keyboardist Logan Watt took the producer's chair. The band recounts the meticulous approach Logan took to getting the song just right - rewriting lyrics line by line with Dusty, bringing the song back to life for them all. The first of their catalogue to feature live strings, a hat tip to Electric Light Orchestra, it’s clear this song has been building in the repertoire for a while and sees the band really hitting the stride.
Following multiple sold out shows in their home state, border closures have locked them out of taking the new music on the road until November, where they’re planning to head to QLD, with the rest of the country expecting to see the band back on the road in 2022.
‘Nothing In This World’ is streaming now on all platforms, and you can catch Wanderers up our way when they play Solbar on November 26, and Felons in Brisbane on November 27.
