The Unknowns newest single, 'Will You Wait For Me' is the type of track to blast in the car on a Friday afternoon. As the traffic swells and the sun sets, this proto-punk/power pop collage seems to make everything ok. With a sound that bounces between The Modern Lovers, Wire, and The Who, The Unknowns ignore whatever's the flavour of the month and stick to sincere rock n' roll.

"We channel those 50s and 60s sounds a lot in our band as we just love the songs of that era," said vocalist Josh Hardy. "We started playing about 5 years ago in high school and gigged in a lot of pubs around the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. We had a lot more blues/rockabilly sounds then, and that's morphed into finding our own sound".

'Will You Wait For Me' is sustained by a hard-hitting guitar riff that would make a young Jonathan Richman smile. Hardy's vocals have a hairiness to them, beautifully matching the distortion of the guitars to create a catchy, repayable single.

Underneath the melody's hook though, is a solid display of lyricism with lines like: "This town has eyes, the streets have teeth/It's not necessarily all your fault, it's about what's underneath." Following classic themes of uncertainty in a relationship, and imbalance between partners.

In a scene awash with psychedelic revivalism, The Unknowns are distilling the other side of the 60s and 70s sound for a modern crowd. They have an established voice with an up-and-coming drive, creating a powerful live energy that clearly comes along in the single.

Catch The Unknowns locally at Scrapyard (Nambour) on April 11.
