Melbourne's Sydney Miller brings blissful prismatic pop in new single, 'Behind Closed Doors'

Phenomenal Melbourne pop artist and producer Sydney Miller hits 2023 head on with the brand new single, ‘Behind Close Doors’. The new track follows on from her 2022 debut EP, ‘The Inside’.

The intriguing single adopts a myriad of door sounds, which suitably resemble the title of the release. Sonic textures cohesively blend together to exhibit an enigmatically tight-knight array of rhythms and melodies, all while still linking to Sydney Miller’s unique pop and electronic sound.

Unlike her discography to date, Behind Closed Doors takes a swift entrance into an epic ballad. Marking the beginning of a journey to break free from self-inflicted oppression, it is emotionally provoking and sensitive, whilst still reminiscent of the vibrant and effervescent production present in her earlier work.

‘Behind Close Doors’ is blissful prismatic pop; from the sampled wooden percussion coming through from different areas of space, to the layers and layers of Sydney’s vocal harmonies, there are pieces of this musical puzzle coming in from all angles. The different tonalities, textures smooth, rubbery, hardened, and fuzzy, they all tickle the cortex. Sydney has created something beautifully unconventional in ‘Behind Closed Doors’, and one would imagine this track would sound huge on a festival stage.

“This song started from a university project I made in 2018. It had roughly 20 vocal lines, a recording of me patting my leg to the beat, and that was it. No processing, just raw audio stacked on top of each other. It was before I really had confidence in production, which is why there is such a strong focus on the (very minimal) lyrics and vocals, and a lack of any structure that resembles typical pop format.

“It was always an important piece for me to come back to one day and amend; it felt like such a triumphant accomplishment for me to write something with such a hopeful undertone. I tried for many years to come back to it! It wasn’t until after I released my EP last year that I finally felt like I was ready to make it into what it is today. That being said though,I definitely don’t think that when I made it at the time I would have envisioned myself adding a whole orchestra of door sounds to it!”

The fruition of this enigmatic production technique and intrinsically vibrant sound can be attributed to Sydney’s unique creative approach, which she has retained since her very first music release back in 2020.

“I always gather a collection of object recordings specific to the song I’m writing before I begin fleshing out the production. I’ll make sure I have a solid variety of sounds that cover a range of textures, harmonic/melodic qualities, and lengths, to somewhat replace traditional instrumental sounds you would expect in a song... like drums, synth lines.”

Sydney has truly tested the boundaries of her sound and added a dimension of depth and versatility to her current discography. But not to fear - Sydney doesn’t view this as a departure of any sort from her recent releases.

“I view Behind Closed Doors as a brief pause on where I left off with ‘The Inside’ and an opportunity to be a bit more vulnerable whilst also exploring new territory as a music maker. I want to be a better artist and individual, and I feel like the best way for me to do that in my practice is by challenging myself to try new approaches.”

Expect to see (much) more from Sydney Miller this year - and have no doubt it will still exhibit those vibrant and quirky traits that accompany all of her releases to date.

‘Behind Closed Doors’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
