Singer-Songwriter Toby Mobbs offers up eclectic debut album, 'Placid In The Rough', and announces national tour.

Singer-songwriter Toby Mobbs will be making his way around the country in support of his debut album, ‘Placid In The Rough’, starting in his hometown of Wagga Wagga, followed by shows in every capital city, ending the tour in his current home of Albury-Wodonga.

Like a musical superhero, Toby keeps a low-profile as a librarian during the day, then shifts in to pop-folk singer-songwriter by night, seeking to carve a unique musical style both live and in the studio by incorporating thick, dynamic, rhythmic guitar, warm vocals, and introspective lyrical storytelling, all of which is evident in his debut album.

‘Placid In the Rough’ , though Toby Mobbs is pitched as a pop-folk singer-songwriter, has a hell of a lot of alternative-rock and indie rock elements interwoven. This album is far more than just another pop-folk offering. There feels like some Dave Matthews Band influences soaking in (minus the pomp), along with a touch of Owl City, with plenty of sonic textures layering up in each song. From opening track, ‘Making Lemonade’ - which has more of an Australian Pub rock feel, albeit at a mellower pace, into the fuzzed-and-phasered Stereophonics-ish ‘Moments’, and the building 70s stadium-rock feel of ‘All; Right Now’ (to which we’re still unsure if the semicolon was a typo when uploading OR intentional, being that we, as all, need to be right now - think about that).

‘Just One Thing’ is an uplifting duet with fellow singer-songwriter Asha Bright, while ‘The River’ is the first real sign of a folk track on the record, teaming up with the affable Nick Keogh (an artist we have featured on The Point before), which is a merging of gently husky voices, and makes for a track that gently ebbs and flows. The bouncy synth-pop of ‘A Mark To Remember’ is a cute change of pace, while ‘The Story So Far’ slips back in to Australian-Folk mode, with minimal beat, and the focus on Toby’s storytelling, highlighted by banjo plucking and a wandering fiddle. Album closer, ‘Will I Be Somebody Else?’ goes all out, with the overall feeling of a theatrical climax more than just the last track of the album.

Toby Mobbs has explored and expanded beyond just that of ‘pop-folk singer-songwriter’ on ‘Placid In The Rough’, and don’t be fooled by the underselling. It’s a larger, eclectic anthology of a multi-faceted artist.

While Toby has been labelled one of the hardest working independent touring musicians in the country, his studio recordings shine a different light to his stripped back performances on stage. These recordings break far away from the solo artist typecast, showcasing a unique interpretation of the many musical genres that inspire his writing.

In 2020 Mobbs announced his ‘Making Lemonade’ Regional Tour consisting of thirty-nine shows across regional New South Wales and Victoria. The tour promoted his debut single by the same name which took out the #1 spot on the Atomic music charts for an unprecedented 15 consecutive weeks, gaining the first 'Triple Uranium' award. In 2021 Mobbs' follow-up track 'Moments' shot up the Triple J Unearthed Chart gaining the #1 spot for Rock and #2 overall. Other charting accolades include reaching #3 on AMRAP's national weekly regional charts with 'Just One Thing' in 2021 .

Toby is throwing himself into a 14,000km tour, over 28 days, to bring the live performance of his album to a city near you, so check the dates below and don’t miss out.

‘Placid In The Rough’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
