Clones, Identity, and Self-Acceptance: Vulpes Argenteus Explores the Surreal on New Single ‘DUPE’

SE Qld-based alt-pop artist Vulpes Argenteus returns with ‘DUPE’, a reggae-touched alt-hip hop groove laced with wit, bounce, and bass. Out October 1, the track marks his third release of 2025, pushing his restless, bass-driven sound into stranger, sharper territory.

The solo project of longtime collaborator, multi-instrumentalist, music journalist and podcaster Rhys Fox, Vulpes Argenteus thrives on twisting abstract lyricism, digital grit and DIY punk spirit into something uniquely his own. After the atmospheric debut ‘The View’ introduced a lush, introspective side, follow-up ‘STUMBLE’ cut loose with sly humour and groove-driven catharsis — racking up early traction and showcasing Fox’s knack for turning ADHD spirals and doomscrolling into dancefloor catharsis.

New single ‘DUPE’ sharpens that vision further, channelling the surreal energy of Gorillaz and outsider-pop punch of Twenty One Pilots into a hook-laden meditation on identity and self-duplication. What started as a throwaway reggae-pop sketch tucked away on a laptop has evolved into a cheeky, infectious jam — part sunny, part cynical, all groove.

Fox explains: “It’s a self-affirming song to myself, with the first half wishing I could create a clone to share the weight of my daily endeavours. For some time now it has felt like I live two separate lives — family and work on one side, the constant need to create on the other. The lyrics switch though when I realise I’m enough and I should celebrate myself a little more. I heard a quote recently: ‘I like me, I’d buy me a beer,’ and that really resonated. Basically, stop being so damn hard on yourself and appreciate your achievements.”

Made for headphones, gallery spaces, and midnight rabbit holes, Vulpes Argenteus is less a project than a world in constant creation. With ‘DUPE’, Fox continues to carve out a space where no idea is too weird, and every beat hits with purpose.

‘DUPE’ is available worldwide on all streaming platforms from October 1.
