Perth's DICE roll out festival-ready debut EP in 'Adolescent Arcade'
Western Australia has long been known as being in a league of their own, birthing acts that just hit different (Tame Impala, Karnivool, Jebediah, Spacey Jane), and you can Perth’s DICE to that list. Boasting an impressive number of streams over seven singles, and a band that is hardly in to their second year of existence, DICE have dropped their debut EP, ‘Adolescent Arcade’ and you can expect this gamble to pay off.
‘Adolescent Arcade’ is not a representation of a band that has been together for a little under a year and a half. Instead, you have a culmination of tracks that should be telling a story of a band well in to their second or third release. Sure, there’s still a little roughness in certain parts, but it’s those quirks that give the flavour - too much polish in indie-rock can often feel like it’s covering for something lacking. Tracks like favourites ‘Double Espresso’ and “Stop Sign’ showcase a maturity to the vocals and lyricism that you would not expect in a band, that technically, should still be feeling its way.
Sonically, it’s not breaking any new ground, but that’s the point. DICE have taken notes from contemporaries Spacey Jane and The Vanns, and have carved a notch in to the Australian Indie-Rock landscape with their hooky festival-ready indie anthems.
Of the release, the band state that they wanted to share their experiences, emotions and struggles over the past year.
“As we progress as a band, we want to show our old and new fans that we’re still a bunch of young guys who are passionate about music. The 4 tracks on the EP are a perfect representation of this and will provide and insight to who we are.” DICE
As always, the boys of DICE have spent time in the studio with trusted collaborator and producer Sam Ford at Tone City Recording Studio (Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, POND & Abbe May) recording their body of work.
“Our songs were written prior to recording during our rehearsals and spare time. However, the collaboration with our producer, Sam Ford led to new ideas that we had not considered before. It was a very collaborative and open minded process of trying new chords, harmonies and lyrics which lifted the song to another level. The ability for different creative minds to be able to share ideas led to additional components being a pivotal part of the tracks.” DICE
Barely a year old, this band's ambition, drive and talent cannot be understated. From playing their first ever gig as a band in November of 2020, to sold-out head-line shows, to playing support for bands like Death by Denim and Great Gable, DICE’s growth is unstoppable. Their most recent release ‘Double Espresso’ secured major Spotify Editorial Playlisting (Front Left, Local Noise, New Music Friday, Rock Out, The Local List, Coast To Coast, Coastal Drive & Fresh Finds), Apple Editorial Playlisting (The New Rock) as well as spins from Triple J Unearthed, and community radio stations like RTR, 2SER and 4ZZZ. To celebrate the release of their upcoming debut EP Adolescent Arcade, DICE have announced a 4 stop tour of WA, the last stop being their very own festival ‘DICE Fest’.
Speaking of this, DICE say “Our upcoming EP tour is a huge milestone for us and a major achievement after only 15 months as a band. We have been privileged to be able to support other bands tours such as Dear Sunday and Death by Denim but there is something extra exciting and special about doing it yourselves. This is definitely a big mark in our career and we are ecstatic to be able to perform our own shows at some of our favourite places such as Margaret River and also do our first All Ages show at YMCA HQ.” DICE
Better bet that DICE will be appearing on festival stages across the country soon enough.
Meanwhile, stream ‘Adolescent Arcade’ now on all digital platforms.
