Brisbane punks PhD dip their toes into alt-rock with fuzzed out new single, 'Tie Dye'
Brisbane punks, PhD kick in to 2022 with a brand new single in ‘Tie Dye’, which sees the four-piece dip their toes in to alt-rock territory, with the focus on releasing the negative energy within.
While their previous release, the EP ‘Keep Dreaming, Weirdo’ presented a more lo-fi punk approach, ‘Tie Dye’ sees a more refined, yet still abrasive sound from PhD.
There’s a hint of ‘Brand New Eyes’-era Paramore sneaking in, particularly with the syncopated rhythm section and guitars in the post-chorus. There’s a lot more happening here than a standard 4-piece structure, with layers of effect-driven guitars, fuzz bass, and frenetic drumming, all while letting vocalist Sydney really let loose.
Of the track, bassist Liam Watson says ‘Tie Dye’ is all about letting go of the past.
“It focuses on feeling negative feelings and emotions instead of bottling them up and letting them consume you. It’s easy to be resentful of the past, but to truly grow as a person you must move on,” he said.
Full of psychedelic swirls, plenty of fuzz and punk bombastics, ‘Tie Dye’ is a cathartic anthem for those who have struggled with moving on, with the hope of helping the listener find some peace.
PhD are playing a handful of shows in support of the release of ‘Tie Dye’, and you’ll be able to catch them at Eleven Dive Bar (Maroochydore) on February 11, Banshees Bar (Ipswich) on February 18, and Greaser Bar (Brisbane) on February 19.
‘Tie Dye’ is available on all streaming platforms now.
