Julian Homewood (Dear Doonan) delivers his debut single in the form of political, thought-provoking protest song, ‘Devil In Your Eye’ - a nostalgic-sounding blues/folk song which takes aim at “The Man”; that is, the system which we are controlled by, as well as our reliance on the system through the use of money.

Inspired by looking at the tall trees in the bush behind his home in Yaroomba, and lamenting the rapid loss of bush and native wildlife in Australia (and the world more broadly), Homewood brings a song that is a journey from the beginning of life without this system, and progressively takes us on a tale through to how the world will end under the current control of this system.

It’s a four-part tale, with a cool, lazy bass line, simple, plodding drums, bright acoustic strumming, and 70s-folk vocals. The accompanying violins strengthen the track, given it a slight melancholy (and at times, sinister) feel, helping to drive the message of ‘Devil In Your Eye’ home.

Clocking in at nearly 7 and a half minutes, nearly all instrumentation on the track is by Homewood (with violin and harmonies provided by Alana Homewood, and Congas by Justin Smith), with recording, mixing and mastering duties by Jack Paterson at Easy Machine Recordings (a solar-powered recording studio at Cedar Creek).

‘Devil In Your Eye’ is the first taste of Homewood’s debut album, ‘Eat The Rich’ - a concept compilation comprising of a selection of his original music written between 2019 to 2021.

‘Devil In Your Eye’ is out now and streaming on all digital platforms.
