If you’ve never heard of ‘Sugar Grunge’ you’d be quickly forgiven - it’s a whole new subgenre born from a passionate Sunshine Coast trio, Fat Pony.

This week, the all-female juggernaut releases a new standout single, ‘On My Back.’ An anthemic track with a sweet vocal harmony and a powerful chorus that’ll get stuck in your head for days.

Hidden beneath the chorus is beautiful 3-part harmony, while the intricate melody and driving bassline carry a deep undercurrent of despair, featuring the raw, Joplin-esque vocals of drummer and singer-songwriter, Liss O’Bryan.

“A song made in a time of distress – ‘On My Back’ was written when I thought I’d finally found my path, until an old employee rang me up with the proposal of moving to WA and having a full time job in science,” says Liss.

For Liss, the song represents a pivotal moment in time. “I didn’t know which way to move in life.. a decision to set me either on course, or off course. Who knows? I’m not sure if I made the right decision yet, it’s probably too early to tell, but I know that if this was the wrong one, it’s a pretty bloody sweet 2nd!”

Fat Pony is a band that neither the drummer or bassist saw coming. Full time muso, and Pony guitarist Lizzy Lamborn, approached the two at the iconic Solbar open mic night with the proposal of a jam. The two used-to-be-guitarists, both experienced musicians, grabbed their newest instruments and made haste in learning them within the week, just in time for the jam.

Armed with a slew of their own songs, written as soloists, the three quickly built out full, layered versions of their acoustic works. ‘On My Back’ is yet another continuation of this collaborative building process.

Lead guitarist Lizzy finds a great amount of joy in this deviation from solo work.

"It’s always a really rewarding process to bring songs that we’ve written as individuals to the band and just make them Fatter. ‘On My Back’ was a great song to start with and it really showcases Liss’s voice. I think the harmonies, a good dose of Muff and a tasteful bass solo have added a lot to it dynamically.” says Lizzy.

As bassist Marisa Anderson explains, Fat Pony’s praised signature sound comes from this ‘fattening’ process.

“We all come from acoustic singer/ songwriter backgrounds, and Fat Pony is an entirely new and exciting beast for all of us! 'On My Back' really showcases the work we have done with our 3 part harmonies,” says Marisa.

“It's been awesome to watch the song evolve and develop. It also highlights the strength in Liss's composition and lead vocal prowess.”

Marisa has taken to the bass like a duck to water in no time, bringing a unique style of bass riffs to the trio.

“Having a bass solo on this track also gave me the opportunity to reach deeper into a new area of musicianship and step out of my guitar background comfort zone. We have had a lot of fun, and can’t wait for you all to hear what we've been working on!”
